Big Red Pigeons Champs! Static Shock Epic Last Inning Charge Short Circuited by Magic Dogs Webgem
In perhaps the most exciting SpeedBall championship game to date, the Big Red Pigeons managed to hold on to victory thanks to an amazing diving catch by Hayes Frederick to pull the power on a furious Static Shock comeback attempt. At the onset, it appeared that the Big Red Pigeons were going to lay an egg, having fanned 5 times in their first 6 at bats. The Static Shock were powerless in the first few frames as well. The Magic Dogs took an early lead on aggressive hitting by Frederick, Lytikainen (triple), and Hong (who was an astounding 6-7). But in the 3rd inning, the egg that the Big Red Pigeons laid early on, finally hatched. Feller, Stockwell, Shan, Stevens, and Lopez combined for 12 hits in the last few innings to what SEEMED to be an insurmountable lead.
Down by 14 runs in the last inning, the Static Shock flipped a switch and charged around the base paths in the greatest comeback attempt since the Backstreet Boys in 2019. Connaghan, Kyle, Costouros, Beck, and Brock delivered some hits of their own and scored a whopping 10 runs, most with 2 outs! It took a Ron Swobodian (circa 1969 Miracle Mets) full-body, vertical diving catch by Hayes Frederick to ice the win for the Big Red Pigeons who took the Gold.
Black Thunder Dragons Rumble to SpeedBall Title
Led by the Willie Mays-esque hitting of Peter Kopp who was 9-9, with a couple homers and a cycle to his credit, the Black Thunder Dragons rumbled their way to the Gold. Tibu and Liam Goodger pitched in as did Ryan Cohen who’s barrel heated up halfway through the game with 3 consecutive dubs. Ryan Cohen, swinging from his heels, walked off with a shot into right field in classic Cohen fashion…and ran non-stop around the bases. The Green Bombers collected 15 hits and a couple web gems by Speedy Phil. Tash Talukder hit a 3-run bomb for the Bombers, and knocked in 6 runs to pace the Green Bombers.
The Yellow Sluggers battled throughout and provided a couple of the game’s best defensive plays. Trevor “Tree” Foster made a great catch that stopped a big rally from the Bombers and “Speedy” Phil Barth was all over the field making play after play. In the end, it was the Peter Kopp show. The bottomline, they just couldn’t stop Kopp! Black Thunder Dragons are the Champions!
Green Beans String Together 2 Big Innings En Route to Championship Title
Clutch hitting by Lev Bicer, “Li’l” Vic, William Larson, Tomas Jaramillo Lopez early on, gave the Green String Beans just enough offense to hold on to a 10-8-8 championship win over The Ravens and Hairy Pringles. Despite the ball bashing abilities of the Hairy Pringles led by “Amazin” Mazon Zwerin who had 3 knocks, along with Davis Bennett, Dane Bochnowski’s round tripper, and the Raven’s Noah Ewings big fly, the GBs played fundamentally sound and took the crown. Noah Ewing who started the game looked more like Randy Johnson with 3 K’s in the first frame. Kudos to multiple RBI games turned in by Lev Bicer with 3 ribs, William Larson with 2, Ewing with 2, and Bennett with 2. Well played by all!
5-Run Pigeons Blast Way to Championship Title for the 9-11 yr. Olds.
Cameron Pyle (4-4),cranked 2 homers including a grand slam to go with his 9 RBIs en route to the 5-Run Pigeons championship win. He had late inning help from teammates Reid Mazzuco, Jack McDonough, Grant Bochnowski (4-4), and Spencer Harley – who gritted his way to a few base knocks to help his club get the big win. The Zappers provided some electricity with Grant Gilmour’s grand slam and outstanding pitching performance, showing a fastball with more hair on it than Colin Kaepernick’s head!
Jackson Allen doubled in a couple runs to pitch in for the Zappers as well. The Green Thunder was led by Avi Buxbaum’s 2 hits and 2 ribbies, while the Kim brothers showed some late inning offensive output with 3 base hits between them. In the end, it was too much Pyle piling up too many RBIs by way of the big fly to keep it close!
