From Shy to Confident: My Son’s Legends Camp Experience
Hi Legends Families,
I started Legends 15 years ago while wrapping up my college ball days at UC Santa Barbara.
Fast forward to today, and my son just finished his very first official week of Legends camp. As you can imagine, emotions were running high all week long.
I was closely watching how he experienced camp. Being the youngest kid there, I had concerns about the long days in the sun. But let me tell you, my son had the best week ever, culminating in an unforgettable moment during the Legends Olympics.
Reflecting on his camp experience, there were three key benefits that made a huge impact on him:
More Confidence in Communicating with Adults: My son’s Rookies group had 4 coaches for 13 kids. Typically, he gets shy and his voice gets higher when speaking with adults. But after just a few days, I’ve seen him speak normally and confidently with adults. Full days of interacting with respectful young coaches improved his communication skills immensely.
Swing Adjustments: Despite my thousands of hours of private lessons, my son had developed some not-so-great habits at the plate. The coaches made significant progress with him in just one week! He’s finally in the stance I’ve been aiming for, and his bat isn’t dropping nearly as much. It reminded me that camp isn’t just about fun; they genuinely get better at baseball too!
Heartwarming Feedback: We send satisfaction surveys at the end of every week. A few years back, we learned that families wanted a report card or evaluation from the coaches. We received Jax’s the other day, and it actually made my wife cry. Proud parent moment here, but I couldn’t ask for a better report about my child’s character!
At-Home Challenges: Last week was Teamwork Week. There were daily at-home challenges with teamwork-based lessons. For instance, he had to watch a baseball game and write down three examples of collaboration. I loved how he dove deep into different elements of teamwork, truly digesting every daily life lesson.
A Moment He Will Never Forget: As you know, Friday is the Legends Baseball Olympics. There’s a TON of intentional experience design for how we end the week of camp, especially the Legends Olympics. Directors are taught to execute the Olympics so it comes down to the very end, culminating in a walk-off moment and epic celebration.
It just so happened that my son was up to bat with the bases loaded, 2 outs, and the entire Olympics on the line. Lucky for me, the moment was captured on camera. This is a moment many kids never have, and something he’ll never forget. My son skipped into the house after camp on Friday. I had never seen him happier. Moments like this create a kid who LOVES team sports and baseball
If you haven’t yet put your child through a Legends camp, I highly recommend you give it a shot. Register here.
And if you have, I hope you’ve had a meaningful experience like my son just did. Our camp is better than it’s ever been, offering the most sophisticated and meaningful camp experience.
He’s got three more camps this summer, and I can’t wait to hear more epic stories!
Hope to see you at camp and BE LEGENDARY!
