What Bay Area kids truly need…
I grew up in West Menlo Park. Near the Dutch Goose. My friends and I would roll around our neighborhood’s streets daily. Looking for mischief. Riding around on bikes, razor scooters and rollerblades. We’d make epic journeys across town to meet up with friends and play in the streets till dark. We’d sneak onto the nicest private school fields. And would play Home Run Derby until security kicked us out. Back then, this was how we played… I now live with my own family, just miles from where I grew up. I run Legends programming at La Entrada, the middle school I went to, and drive the same streets my friends and I grew up roaming 7 days a ...
Why We Don’t Do Travel Ball
“Coach David. Is the game over already” It was 8:45am...October 8th at Twin Creeks. I woke up at 5:30am to drive 1 hour and 15 minutes from my apartment in Laurel Heights of San Francisco to the Twin Creeks tournament complex in Sunnyvale. My 9U AA team was playing in the Sunday morning 8am game as the bottom seed. Yes, 8am first pitch… If we won, we’d move on. If we lost, we’d be eliminated. I had just recently started Legends Academy which was built on the “travel ball” or “tournament” model. Instead of worrying about what just happened or what MIGHT happen if we mess up, when we stay focused on the present moment, we increase our chances of success. Our routines must contain three specific things: Focal point - The focal point is something physical which initiates your routine (stare at a letter on your bat, ...

The New Legendary Life Playbook!
It was on my to do list for years... I called them "at-home challenges". Homework sounded like "work". Once a week after practice I would delivery a speech and hand out a sheet of paper with a "Legends Life Task". It could be a meditation, home workout, new hobby to try, assigned reading... My goal was simple... to teach my players the game of life THROUGH baseball.
